Session 116
No thoughts. No definitions. Pinning things down too tightly risks losing their essence. Beauty is…
Color is…
Sound is…
Some truths refuse to be caged by words. The subconscious whispers of a world unseen, urging us to shift our gaze outward, away from the murmur of self. Look beyond, not within. To fixate on yourself is to risk blindness to the infinite.
To be nothing… The vastness of space is not defined by its boundaries but by its lack of them, by its potential. Step into that vastness. Let yourself become unmoored, free from the constraints of self, and in that freedom, you will find what it means to truly let go.
Yeivesa -The Spirit Walker, Lecture 20
The party reaches Craze Pass by cloud. The supernatural frost of the north is gone, replaced by a heavy warmth and the electric thrum of raw magic. Below, the settlement sprawls - scavenged canvas and rough stone beneath a jagged granite mountain, the sky churning with bruised violet clouds and the sun gone, leaving a dangerous twilight. Two dust clouds flank them: the Adjudicators, voices magically amplified, bellowing the commands of the Writ Compact.
Sand and Folly
Section titled “Sand and Folly”The shift from the northern frost is abrupt - a collision of climates, the natural sun replaced by the oppressive static hum of magical radiation. The party heeds the Adjudicators’ order not to enter by air, descends and solidifies, and disperses into the tent city on the outskirts of Craze Pass. Here the cracks in the group’s unity finally give way.
The Tithe of Twilight
Section titled “The Tithe of Twilight”The Twilight Blade demands its tithe - violence against the wicked, paid every twenty-four hours. Peach slips away, the blade acting as a dowsing rod for malice. It leads him to an unremarkable tent that, inside, is a killer’s shrine, decorated with trinkets of the slain. The blade hadn’t lied. Peach kills the murderer with a single stroke, beheading him before he can scream, then burns the tent, sending oily black smoke into the violet sky. Panic ripples through the streets, but the tithe is paid.
The Shadow and the Compass
Section titled “The Shadow and the Compass”Back at the landing zone, Dax sits in an old octagon pavilion, Mack and Orianna standing guard. He lights a candle and performs a shadow-puppet ritual - a hiker, a compass, a rabbit. The shadow-compass spins, ignoring magnetic north, and locks onto a spiritual vector pointing into the heart of the city. Ravynne is inside Craze Pass.
The Smuggler’s Path
Section titled “The Smuggler’s Path”The group debates signing the Writ or finding another way in. Aydriann sees the Writ as shackles - putting his name on a list would flare like a beacon to Edmeera. He turns away and switches to Thieves’ Cant, reading the coughs, stances, and hand signs of the trade rows until he spots a signal. A figure offers a path that bypasses the Writ: The Warrens.
- The Cost: 50 gold pieces a head.
- The Time: Midnight.
Ghosts of the Circus
Section titled “Ghosts of the Circus”While they wait in the trade rows, Ember’s past catches up to her as she chases Aydriann to bring him back. A Deamonoch steps from the crowd - Ezra, the mage from the Illumine Circus. The conversation is brief and devastating: the attack on the Illumine Circus took Keyvath, Ezra’s love at the time. Ezra now wears their colors, having submitted to the machine that would have killed him - Keyvath had been meant to win the match, and was the true noble, though Ezra hadn’t known it. Ezra submitted for his family. Ember sees only cowardice; heartbroken and disgusted, she turns away. She will not bow to a law that allows a magical death duel, and joins Aydriann and Rosibynne in forgoing the Writ.
The Fox and the Golem
Section titled “The Fox and the Golem”Mack stands sentinel during Dax’s ritual and catches movement - a small, goblin-like creature watching them. A Qirvani. She corners it against a rock face, and the spy divulges her quest: she serves the Shifting Sands, and “The Fox” (Vyre) and “The Bird” (Ravynne) are looking for Mack. An elderly woman, Hesina, emerges from a nearby tent, looking like she’d seen divinity. She works with Mack to arrange for Ravynne to meet Mack outside the city, and stays close to her.
The Schism
Section titled “The Schism”The party stands scattered. Aydriann, Ember, and Rosibynne intend the midnight smuggling run. Peach, his blade sated, stands alone. Orianna and Dax watch the walls, Dax’s shadow-magic fading, knowing Ravynne is within reach.
