Part 1: The Cosmic Wound & The Memory Wipe
Section titled “Part 1: The Cosmic Wound & The Memory Wipe”The vision’s final stretch pulls the party into Lacuna, Jazouhr’s mythic domain. They witness a massive portal depositing thousands of terrified mortal refugees from a destroyed world, escorted by Celeste, Malith, and Lia. On arrival, the mortals are surrounded by Jazouhr’s creations, the Erums - nightmarish, structurally unnatural beings, many eyeless, with too many crawling limbs, some twisted into the shape of horrific deer. Jazouhr himself manifests in two forms at once: a city-sized dragon with iridescent, galaxy-like scales, and his “true” form - a towering celestial-demonic hybrid with skeletal wings, a centipede-like body, floating tentacle-hair, and a face with mismatched eyes frozen in a scream.
Venetrix (Trixs) diagnoses the hazard Jazouhr has created: forcing a destroyed world’s survivors into Lacuna won’t merge the realities - the incompatible worlds pressing together create a cosmic “wound.” The Erums suffer the most, not from malice but from an “irresolvable incapability” to coexist with the invasive mortals. She also reveals Jazouhr currently holds two divine shards - Chaos and Creation - and warns that patient, watching entities will try to exploit this wound to take what he carries.
The projection violently ends, dropping the party back outside the cavern; only about ten minutes of real time have passed. But they immediately suffer a localized memory wipe: all memory of Venetrix, her tent, and their dealings with her is erased. Without that anchor, Ember rationalizes the disturbing visions of her girlfriend’s possible betrayal as nothing more than a bad dream or a hallucination from the Folly’s fumes.
Aydriann’s bargain with the Fiend hits him hard. Having surrendered the memory of his family’s death, the excision causes severe neurological damage, dropping his intelligence to a toddler’s and leaving him with a piercing migraine - he can’t even work out four plus four. Dax spends the hour-long trek back trying to teach him basic numbers, with no success. Aydriann retains only a vague, private awareness that he traded something away.
Meanwhile Tess analyzes Fornova’s physics: two sources of magic are clashing. Mortals usually draw on “The Weave” (ancient, structured ley lines), but it’s being violently interrupted by “The Source” (raw, untamed Aether) - the cause of the Folly’s volatile environment and wild magic surges. Dax tries to ritually cast Telepathic Bond on the march; the Aether-heavy atmosphere collapses the spell, though it preserves his slot.
Part 2: Refining the Crystal & The Leviathan
Section titled “Part 2: Refining the Crystal & The Leviathan”Separated by the earlier planar displacement, Rosibynne had arrived alone at the fortified outpost, where she met Captain Sai and Navani. Now the air around the outpost turns unnaturally humid and heavy - a sudden shift in pressure warning that either a catastrophic Folly storm or something massive is bearing down.
Sai’s airship - a blimp over a metallic hull - is grounded, its engineers panicking as they try to haul out a burned-out aether-crystal and demand a replacement. But the crystal the party extracted is raw and unrefined, incompatible with the engine. Out of time, Rosibynne attempts a dangerous brute-force “hack” to refine it with tinker’s tools, a wet rag, and a hammer, battering off the excess crystalline shell. Raw magic resists kinetic tampering: the agitated core erupts in sparks and aetheric discharge, and Dax has to physically pull Rosibynne clear of the blast. The labor works and jumpstarts the engine - but the disturbance on the horizon finally arrives. It isn’t a storm; it’s a mobile city-state, Caerulith, the City of Water - a motorized floating mountain bearing down at terrifying speed. Its scale makes combat impossible, shifting the goal from defense to negotiation and survival.
Part 3: The Parley and the Splintered Party
Section titled “Part 3: The Parley and the Splintered Party”As Caerulith - an Andari (water-kin) metropolis powered by a massive aetheric core - eclipses the sky over the grounded airship, fighting it is out of the question. Instead the city opens a strict, bureaucratic negotiation by unfurling five flags (three set apart from two, in alternating white-and-red patterns with a blue “X”). Reading the Andari protocol, Captain Sai climbs atop his damaged ship and - since the irradiated air degrades communication magic - flashes precise light signals into the smog to open a parley. The terms are grim: Caerulith won’t guarantee the airship’s safety, but will talk if delegates ascend to the city.
Knowing they’re walking into a den of vipers, the party splits:
- Rearguard: Peach, Mack, Rosibynne, and Orianna stay on the airship to guard Sai’s first mate, Navani, and their aether-assets.
- Overwatch: Ember expends a 7th-level Etherealness to shift into the Border Ethereal as an undetectable observer.
- Vanguard: Dax and Aydriann ascend as the diplomats, with Tess hitching along disguised as a rock formation via her resonance magic.
Aydriann tries to set up a Telepathic Bond between the crews, but the Folly’s aetheric radiation collapses the ritual into static - preserving his slot but costing them cross-party comms.
Caerulith lowers magical water-tethers from its undercarriage, attaching to the airship and forming a pressurized liquid escalator. Riding up, Dax and Aydriann see the city’s industrial labor below: Andari “harvesters” drop onto the irradiated sand and temporarily terraform it - converting dead, toxic sand into fleeting patches of green life and pure water - as a cooling mechanism so the colossal water-city can pass over the Folly without degrading. On the way up, Sai confesses a problem: he’s a wanted fugitive. He and Navani illegally escaped the rival wind-city of Myrrdain, so by dragging the party into Caerulith’s jurisdiction he’s made them harborers of a fugitive, weakening their position.
Part 4: The Hydromancer’s Audit
Section titled “Part 4: The Hydromancer’s Audit”Inside, Caerulith is a city of smooth, wavelike marble threaded with greenery and flowing water. Its power comes from a central Spire Core - a seven-story aether-crystal pulsing blue, held aloft by intricate iron supports - that drives the city’s movement and life support. Guards bring the diplomats to an elevator: a hand on a large marble orb activates an aetheric circuit, and a rush of water shoots them up the spire into an expansive observatory, a windowless balcony ringed with peepholes for surveying the wasteland.
There they face the city’s leader, Cerouse the Hydromancer (a historical title tying her to the ancient Covenant of Icarus). Her skin is deep blue from the chest down, darker above; her hair floats as if submerged, fading from dark blue at the roots to white at the tips; and shifting aether-tattoos move across her skin. She reads the party’s elemental makeup, identifies Tess’s rock-disguise as a Rivari (earth-kin), and is coldly relieved - Caerulith holds no quarrel with earth-kin or wind-kin, but fiercely hates the Cindari (fire-kin). Her scouts had detected a Cindari (Ember) among them; noting Ember’s sudden absence, Cerouse cuts past pleasantries and demands to know if the party is working for Sypha Ignis.
It shatters the party’s understanding of history. Sypha Ignis - Ember’s ancestor, the legendary Pyromancer who led the disastrous ascension ritual that obliterated Eistrae and carved out Wizard’s Folly - was not destroyed in the cataclysm. According to Cerouse, she is still alive, and her presence still manipulates the elemental warfare of the Folly.
