Session 128
Part 1: The Truth in the Trance
Section titled “Part 1: The Truth in the Trance”Trixs’s alchemical vision (she is the deity Ozana) lays bare several pieces of hidden history.
The Alchemical Betrayal: Aydriann sees the destruction of the Cliffside Conclave. His brother Corsten had rigged the district with an alchemical explosive - “silent flame” - with five infiltrators, meaning to extract his family and his dwarf lover, Drum. But his escape was blocked by his three brothers, Alvin, Orybar, and Nibben, who reveal they’d manipulated the Conclave’s politics - claiming to have exiled Corsten to raise their own status - and now planned to turn him in while framing Tess for the treason. Corsten bulls through their line so Tess can flee; in the scuffle an infiltrator is shoved onto the detonator, igniting the silent flame. Tess, lost in the caverns, is consumed by the blast.
The Aetheric Intercept: Tess’s spirit, suspended in a bright void after her death, is intercepted by Muvara - a woman in black robes with a single gold strand of hair and an upside-down red teardrop tattoo on her cheek. Muvara offers to carry her to a brighter “Paradise” where she won’t be punished for dancing, guiding her away from the fallout.
The Archfey Loophole: The vision shifts to Preslynn trying to end her warlock pact with the archfey Mirin and with Edmeera. She pleads with a gray-robed figure who reveals himself as Xanthos - dark linen wrappings, blue glowing eyes, and mechanical wings of cold dark steel that articulate like swords. He says the cosmos’s “blood laws” prevent him from granting her a death to sever the contract; she must instead choose a side in the cosmic war. It’s later deduced that Preslynn exploited a loophole, using Muvara’s veil to hide her location and keep Mirin and Edmeera from extracting information from her.
The Cosmological Forge: Trixs shows the creation of Fornova - a moon-sized orbital structure woven entirely from giant spider silk. Inside, lost astral creatures hang suspended while Edmeera siphons their life and memories. Her true form is a colossal alien arachnid-crustacean hybrid with translucent chitin, twitching mandibles, and a fleshy abdomen pulsing with necrotic radiation. She funnels the harvested energy into a massive glowing tree of life - Yllena. Jazouhr addresses Edmeera as his creation and praises the system’s efficiency; Edmeera, hostile to mortals, vows to subject them to pain and rot.
The Aetheric Exodus: Finally, the mass migration to Fornova. Jazouhr stands in a bioluminescent grove with the physical forms of Lesoleil (a stag-like entity with twenty-point antlers, a lion’s mane, and a central eye) and Lelune (crescent antlers). He tears open a portal to a separate, burning world and leads the original heroes - Celeste, Malith, and Lia - and thousands of mortal refugees into the current sphere. Trixs abruptly cuts the vision off, saying Jazouhr is watching and disapproves of her tampering with his “playground.”
Part 2: Wild Magic
Section titled “Part 2: Wild Magic”The vision ends, dropping the party back at the outpost - where Trixs and her extradimensional tent have completely vanished. Captain Sai expects them to rest, but Dax tells him the plan has changed: they won’t be sleeping.
Before moving out, Adrian talks with the automaton Tess, who shares a breakthrough. She theorizes that Aether (the Source) functions as light and frequency, while ley lines (the Weave) function as time - a magi-punk equivalent of E=mc² and the basis for a “School of Resonance.” It explains why spells misfire in the Folly: the local aetheric frequencies are violently disrupted.
Skipping a long rest, the party marches five miles northwest to a two-story cavern entrance near a mountain dune, arriving around 5:00 AM. Dax ritually casts Commune with Nature; the irradiated environment triggers a wild magic surge and he fails the stability roll - all his hair instantly falls out, leaving him bald. The divination still works: a 3-mile radius with no settlements or planar portals, but a CR 10+ Fiend exactly 500 feet deep in the cave.
Aydriann ritually casts Telepathic Bond to link the party. During the ritual, he pulls Ember aside about Preslynn’s pact, reasoning out the lethal consequences of breaking an archfey contract and advising that, compromised as Preslynn is, her survival depends on keeping the loophole intact. Scouting the entrance, they find patches of unnatural magical darkness that ordinary light cantrips can’t pierce, and plan to use a Candle of Arcane Light held by Orianna. Dax tries Pass Without Trace, but the wild magic surges a second time and the spell fails, consuming his free casting. Aydriann compensates with an Arcane Eye, steering it 500 feet down past the darkness to confirm the aether-crystal’s location, then casts Circle of Power for advantage on magical saves before they descend.
Part 3: The Source Crystal
Section titled “Part 3: The Source Crystal”The party advances into the cavern, the Candle of Arcane Light cutting through the magical darkness. At 200 feet in, a telepathic entity makes contact, acknowledging how much stronger they are than previous intruders.
Orianna opens a negotiation (rolling a 29 on Persuasion) to trade for the crystal, and Dax tries to pass off an empty Eden arcane battery as a charged power source - but fails the DC 25 Tinker check (rolling 8), and the entity immediately diagnoses the deception.
The entity - a massive CR 10+ Fiend, revealed to be a 25-by-25-foot giant scorpion - demands a “juicy memory” as payment for the aether-crystal. Aydriann volunteers, permanently excising his traumatic memory of his family and Tess dying in the Conclave’s explosion, which satisfies the exchange.
The crystal is roughly the mass of a two-seat couch, buried deep in the sand; Orianna (27 Athletics), assisted by Peach and a third member, spends 30 minutes digging it out. Inside the crystal, a small humanoid electrical elemental waves at them.
They also trade riddles with the fiend. They first stump it with “What gets wetter the more it dries?” (a towel). It counters with three of its own:
- “I never was. I am always to be. No one ever saw me. No one ever will.” → Tomorrow.
- “I am the architect of castles that can never be. I paint the sky with colors no eye should see. I resurrect the dead.” → A dream.
- “I have no voice, but I demand to be kept. I have no weight, but I can easily crush a man. I am freely given, but tightly bound. Once broken, I can rarely be pieced entirely.” → A promise.
By paying in memory and logic instead of blood, the party secures the aether-battery without a fight, preserves their spell slots, and exits the cavern to return to camp.
