An evil start
Section titled “An evil start”The blast that ended the last fight left the dead scattered through the mud - it had caught Aydriann and Rosibynne full-on and taken half of Ember, and the smallfolk now wail over their fallen kin. Dazed, Aydriann endures a vision. Edmeera’s voice taunts him over Corsten’s destruction, telling him to lay his curses at Muvara’s feet, not hers - the “whore god” stitched a spirit meant for the Dark World into the vessel of a hound and called it wisdom, and now Corsten is gone. She notes Tess trembling in the shadows, says the girl has the look of prey and won’t last, and that with Corsten gone she has only Aydriann as a shield.
The vision shifts to a memory-echo aboard an airship: Venoxyin and Mack sitting in a sickly light. Venoxyin opens up about the quiet she found in a place without pain or the voices that call her a failure - about how Adrian made a deal with “an evil guy” who has held it over her ever since, how all she ever wanted was to be one of the friends, and how three days passed with no one coming. She thanks Mack for talking her down on the bow of the ship, for telling her it might be worth staying around a little longer. Then the timbers rot away and Aydriann floats in a void as Edmeera calls him nothing, useless - before the cold reality of Craze Pass slams back into him.
The Weight of Silence
Section titled “The Weight of Silence”Corsten is gone, the realization a crushing pressure. Aydriann steps through the veil into the Spirit Realm to escape the screaming; the world turns to grayscale mist and the noise stops. Ember sees him go and, with a gesture to Muvara, follows. Muvara apologizes, guilt flickering through her; Aydriann tells her the fault is not hers but Edmeera’s. She offers him a way out with no judgment or shame, but he refuses - “We continue. To stop is to make this vain.” They step back into the color and noise, leaving Rosibynne blinking at their sudden return. There’s no time to explain: Peach messages that he’s under attack. Aydriann looks up - Peach is aloft, and not alone.
The Stalemate of Speed
Section titled “The Stalemate of Speed”For Peach, the world has narrowed to violet light and rushing wind against Vela’s predatory speed - a perfect, terrifying stalemate. He taps his Ki for a Hand of Healing, knitting his wounds in a single breath. Vela unleashes a storm of razored feathers; Peach roots himself and uses Deflect Attacks to absorb the lethal force into a graze. Then space folds and Ember, Aydriann, and Rosibynne arrive through a Dimension Door. The odds shifted, Vela sneers, “You brought friends. I bid you farewell,” and launches seven hundred feet up in a heartbeat. Peach stands alone on the rooftop, the Twilight blade humming, its strike denied.
The Tether
Section titled “The Tether”For Mack, downed, the screaming and grinding gears vanish into the silence of the Spirit Realm. A figure in grey robes and a porcelain mask stands before her; he removes it to reveal a youthful face with molten-gold eyes - Hush. He observes, clinical as an artificer, that Mack has a weak tether, and so does the untethered spirit of Hesina drifting nearby. He warns her: her soul is old, older than the shell she wears, and her Connection to the physical realm is fraying. If she were to die, it would be difficult to pull her back.
The Kill Box
Section titled “The Kill Box”Reality snaps back with Mack down and the Scrappers closing the net. Dax channels a fourth-level surge of restoration - forty-one points of life - and the golem rises. Orianna calls down a Moonbeam on the Hull Breaker, the man who’d felled Mack. Cloaked in invisibility by Dax’s shadow-weaving, Mack closes the distance and drives her blade through the Hull Breaker’s heart. With their captain dead, the bandits break and flee into the smoke of the burning tent city. The party lets them go - the ground is won, but the tally isn’t finished.
The Mathematics of Distance
Section titled “The Mathematics of Distance”Peach, Ember, Aydriann, and Rosibynne watch the assassin vanish into the clouds. Vela’s burst of speed has opened a gap of nearly 750 feet. Ember weighs chaining a teleport and spells to chase her down, but the arcane cost and risk don’t favor it. They let her go. Then Edmeera’s voice cuts into Aydriann again, repeating the cold taunt about Corsten and Muvara. Numb, he turns away and walks on, because stopping means accepting the truth.
The Cost
Section titled “The Cost”The adrenaline fades. At the Pavilion, Dax kneels beside Hesina’s still form and reaches out with his magic, hoping for a spark to pull - but she’s dead. Orianna says nothing. She holsters her weapon and lifts the old woman’s body to carry her back to her people.
