Part 1: The Drift Bazaar, the Crystals, and the Breach Gate
Section titled “Part 1: The Drift Bazaar, the Crystals, and the Breach Gate”I. The Drift Bazaar Transaction
Section titled “I. The Drift Bazaar Transaction”To survive the ambient magical radiation of Wizard’s Folly, the party sought out a merchant in the Drift Bazaar who had the last remaining Lennin crystals. The merchant, a green-skinned Dae Elf with wild hair kept back by a bandana and oversized goggles, initially set a steep market price: 1,000 gold pieces for a two-week supply, or 500 gold pieces for one week.
Dax utilized his high Charisma, rolling a 26 on Persuasion to haggle. He successfully negotiated a price of 750 gold pieces for a two-week supply (84 crystals in total, calculated at one crystal per person per day).
II. The Hard Magic Retcon: Lennin Crystals
Section titled “II. The Hard Magic Retcon: Lennin Crystals”During this exchange, a critical mechanical clarification was made regarding how the Lennin crystals function.
- The Mechanic: To prevent bogging down the table with the complex rules of an Anti-Magic Field (which would suppress player abilities, magic items like Umbra, and class features), the DM explicitly ruled that the crystals do not nullify magic.
- The Function: The crystals act strictly as environmental radiation shielding. They stabilize the wild magic radiation around the wearer, allowing the party to cast spells and utilize magic items normally without instantly suffering catastrophic biological or magical mutations.
III. The Breach Gate & The Eldon Suspects
Section titled “III. The Breach Gate & The Eldon Suspects”Descending to the very bottom of the canyon, the party arrived at the Breach Gate…a narrow, dark wedge illuminated by aether-lamps. Because Orianna had bribed the clerk (Phil) to bundle their group of six into an existing launch window, they met their forced traveling companions: a group of three heavily suspected to be the Eldon Order.
The trio consisted of two elves (one with dark purple skin, the other fair-skinned) who appeared to carry no adventuring gear, and a Rivari named Randelle.
IV. Randelle the Rivari & The Curse of the Folly
Section titled “IV. Randelle the Rivari & The Curse of the Folly”Randelle provided critical world-building intelligence regarding Wizard’s Folly.
- Physical Traits: As a Rivari (an Earth-descendant Follykin), Randelle possesses rough, gray, rock-like skin, spiky white crystalline hair on the left side of his head, and gray crystalline eyes.
- The Native Curse: Randelle revealed a hard biological mechanic of the wasteland: natives of Wizard’s Folly are physically tethered to the environment. If they leave the Folly, they suffer from a deteriorating curse that causes their skin to crack and crumble. Randelle estimated he had less than a year to live and was returning to the Folly to die and be “consumed by the sands”.
- The Roaming Cities: Randelle warned the party of the geopolitical threats inside the barrier. Large scavenger cities roam the shifting sands, powered by the elemental “Hearts” of the Folly. He specifically cautioned them to avoid the warring cities of Kuth (powered by Fire, seeking vengeance) and Valeron (powered by Water). Randelle’s own destination was Karn, a city located deep near the Earth core.
Part 2: Into the Folly
Section titled “Part 2: Into the Folly”I. The Breach & The Wild Magic Zone
Section titled “I. The Breach & The Wild Magic Zone”At 2:00 AM, the massive breach gates opened, venting steam as the party of nine…your group of six alongside the three travelers…stepped through into a dark cavern lit by scattered crystals.
Attempting to bypass the travel time, Dax cast a spell to move as the wind, but the chaotic radiation of the Folly caused it to fail catastrophically; Dax was stunned and immediately fell to the ground. The hard magic reality of Wizard’s Folly was quickly established: standard Weave magic is entirely suppressed here, and local magic is powered solely by the irradiated sands.
II. Scavenging High-Yield Aether
Section titled “II. Scavenging High-Yield Aether”While their traveling companions stopped for a rest after only 30 minutes, your party pressed on alone. While searching for usable materials, Ember utilized the Dancing Lights cantrip and spotted a unique crystal embedded in the cavern wall. Unlike the other crystals, this one radiated intense heat.
Recognizing its potential as raw magi-punk fuel, the party spent time carefully chiseling it out. Once refined and warm to the touch, Mack opened her mechanical faceplate…functioning as a localized storage compartment…and safely stored the crystal to be used later as high-yield ammunition for her Liga weapon.
III. The 59-Minute Mark & The Apex Predator
Section titled “III. The 59-Minute Mark & The Apex Predator”After exactly 59 minutes of travel, the party emerged from the cavern into a massive, 1,000-foot-high open expanse within the canyon. Just as the Weave stabilized and their magic returned, they were forced to roll initiative.
A gargantuan monstrosity…an Aether-Gorged Great Worm…burst from the earth directly in front of them. The fight immediately showed how lethal it was:
- The Bite (Swallow Mechanic): The worm bypassed Orianna’s defenses with a massive 37 to hit, dealing 34 damage (24 piercing, 10 force). Orianna was instantly swallowed, subjected to total cover, the Blinded and Restrained conditions, and ongoing acid and force damage at the start of the worm’s turns. Inside the beast, Orianna retaliated, unleashing a massive 44 radiant damage via her Divine Smites to try and force the worm to regurgitate her.
- The Aether-Flux Breath: The worm unleashed a cone of volatile gas. Ember rolled a 19 on her Constitution saving throw, which was a failure. She absorbed the full brunt of the attack…67 Force damage…and instantly dropped to 0 hit points, falling unconscious.
- The Tail Stinger & Phase Shift: The worm burrowed 10 feet down to reposition, subsequently lashing out with its tail to deal 32 piercing damage to Peach. To survive the escalating threat and gain a massive pool of temporary hit points, Aydriann utilized his magic to transform into a gargantuan Titanoboa.
Part 3: Scouting and Retreat (before the ambush)
Section titled “Part 3: Scouting and Retreat (before the ambush)”This part rewinds to the reconnaissance and retreat that happened before the worm ambush described above.
This section covers the party’s cautious approach to the Folly’s hazards, the loss of their familiars, and their strategic retreat to secure a massive mechanical milestone.
I. Reconnaissance and the Death of the Familiars
Section titled “I. Reconnaissance and the Death of the Familiars”While traversing the flat, desolate path of Wizard’s Folly, the party spotted a large hill range about a mile out, which contained an embedded tunnel entrance. Respecting the lethal reputation of the Folly, they refused to blindly charge in. Instead, they halted roughly 120 feet away and deployed their familiars to scout the perimeter.
- The Aerial Threat: A crow familiar was sent 100 feet into the air to peer over the hill. It was instantly struck and killed, vanishing in a puff of smoke, proving that the skies of the Folly are actively hostile.
- The Ground Threat (Magi-punk Security): Aydriann then sent his mechanical familiar, Sprocket, stealthily into the tunnel entrance. Inside, Sprocket discovered two machine-like structures flanking a patch of black sand. The moment Sprocket crossed the threshold, the black sand reacted to the intrusion, glowing with a volatile blue-white light before Sprocket’s feed went entirely dead.
II. The Cave-In and Tactical Retreat
Section titled “II. The Cave-In and Tactical Retreat”Realizing the tunnel was heavily fortified with reactive Eden-tech or Folly hazards, and sensing the impending threat of a massive horde behind them, the party opted for a tactical withdrawal.
To cover their tracks and seal the threat, Peach utilized the Shatter spell, targeting the cavern entrance to trigger a localized cave-in. Simultaneously, Dax cast Pass Without Trace (+10 to Stealth checks and leaving no footprints) to ensure the party could sprint 60 feet away without being tracked.
III. The Stone Sanctuary and the Radiation Timer
Section titled “III. The Stone Sanctuary and the Radiation Timer”The party could not return to Craze Pass, nor could they safely press forward. They located an abandoned, enclosed stone structure near the mile-gap to use as a temporary bunker. Inside, they were forced to wait out a 4-hour window until 6:00 PM, allowing the lethal ambient radiation of the Folly’s “Dawn Call” to subside before they could safely operate in the open.
IV. System Mastery: The Level 13 Milestone
Section titled “IV. System Mastery: The Level 13 Milestone”During this 4-hour lockdown in the stone structure, the DM announced a critical mechanical shift for the campaign: The party officially leveled up to Level 13.
Crossing into Level 13 is the threshold for Tier 3 play, granting the primary spellcasters access to 7th-level spell slots (Plane Shift, Teleport, Forcecage). The DM had the players update their character sheets but warned them not to use their new Level 13 abilities until the narrative officially bridged the gap.
Part 4: The Great Worm, Blow by Blow
Section titled “Part 4: The Great Worm, Blow by Blow”I. Initiative and The “Dual Initiative” Reveal
Section titled “I. Initiative and The “Dual Initiative” Reveal”As the party stepped into the 1,000-foot-high expanse of the Folly, the titan breached the surface. The party rolled initiative, with some tactical swapping allowed at the table: Orianna took 21, Dax 16, Peach 15, Aydriann 15, Mack 8, and Ember 6.
Before the first strike, the DM revealed the core mechanic that makes this titan a Tier 3 threat: Dual Initiative. The monster literally takes two full turns per round, completely resetting its reaction economy each time it cycles back to its turn.
II. The First Strike: The Swallow Mechanic
Section titled “II. The First Strike: The Swallow Mechanic”The worm bypassed standard targeting and immediately attacked Orianna.
- The Math: The worm rolled a massive 37 to hit. It dealt 24 piercing damage and 10 force damage (34 total).
- The Consequence: Orianna was instantly swallowed. She was subjected to total cover, the Blinded condition, and the Restrained condition.
- The Inside Fight: Trapped inside the titan’s digestion matrix, Orianna retaliated on her turn. She unleashed a barrage of attacks fueled by Divine Smite, prioritizing radiant damage. The table-talk grew incredibly tense as the math was calculated: to force the worm to make a Constitution saving throw to regurgitate her, she needed to deal exactly 40 damage in a single turn. She dealt substantial damage but rolled a 2 on a critical damage die, missing the required threshold by exactly 2 points. She remained trapped.
III. The Aether-Flux Breath & The Fall of Ember
Section titled “III. The Aether-Flux Breath & The Fall of Ember”On its turn, the worm unleashed its Aether-Flux Breath, a 90-foot cone of volatile magical gas.
- The Math: Ember rolled a 19 on her Constitution saving throw. Against a Tier 3 DC, this was a failure.
- The Consequence: Ember absorbed the unmitigated force damage of the blast and instantly dropped to 0 hit points, falling incapacitated to the Folly floor.
IV. Repositioning & The Titanoboa
Section titled “IV. Repositioning & The Titanoboa”Realizing the sheer lethality of the creature, the party scrambled to adapt. The worm burrowed 10 feet down into the irradiated sand to safely reposition. Knowing his baseline hit points could not survive a direct strike, Aydriann utilized his magic to transform into a gargantuan Titanoboa (a prehistoric giant snake), instantly generating a massive pool of temporary hit points to anchor the battlefield.
V. The Second Turn: Total System Failure
Section titled “V. The Second Turn: Total System Failure”The worm then took its second full turn in the initiative order, triggering its passive internal damage and unleashing its multiattack.
- Internal Digestion: Inside the stomach, Orianna suffered 12 acid damage and 22 force damage (34 total) at the start of the worm’s turn.
- The Bite: The worm erupted and targeted Peach. It rolled a 33 to hit. The damage was catastrophic: 42 piercing and 20 force (62 total), instantly dropping Peach to 0 hit points alongside Ember.
- The Tail Stinger: Utilizing its remaining attack, the tail whipped toward Mack. The attack landed with a 39 to hit, inflicting 32 piercing damage against her metallic chassis.
VI. The Cliffhanger
Section titled “VI. The Cliffhanger”The session ended immediately after this devastating second turn. The table-talk reflected the grim reality of their failing action economy: Ember and Peach were both unconscious and dying on the sand, Orianna was slowly being dissolved inside the titan, and only Dax, a battered Mack, and Aydriann (in snake form) remained operational.
